Oplatky - The Wafer Iron
During the Depression, the original oplakty iron broke and there was no place to purchase a new iron. One of our members, Andy Slifka, worked with his employer, Martin Svoren, to make a new iron form. Drawings were scaled to size so that the Slovak words could also be etched on the steel plates of the wafer tongs. Andy, who now lives in California, should be very proud of his work. The wafer iron that Andy helped to build is still used to make oplatky at Pentecost today! |
